On Thursday, November 20th, 2014 Girls Incorporated of Taunton celebrated life, community and leadership at the third annual Love of Life Event. In dedication to the life and commitment of former Board of Trustees Vice President, Darlene Costa Brown, Girls Inc. honored the service of Dan DaRosa and awarded a leadership scholarship to Avery LaValle.
Costa Brown’s impact on Girls Inc. and its members was felt through her volunteer instruction of the Economic Literacy curriculum and her service on the Board of Trustees. As vice president, Darlene hoped to lead the organization in shaping a future that was both secure and dynamic. Her enthusiasm and fierce dedication for enriching the lives of the members continues to infuse the mission and aids in carrying on her life’s work.
In tribute to Costa Brown, Girls Inc. of Taunton honored Dan DaRosa for his commitment and service to Girls Inc. and the Taunton community. DaRosa provided generous support to Girls Inc. of Taunton in 2013 and 2014, which included donations that provided us with a new roof on our facility. In addition, DaRosa worked with other local businesses to garner support for additional facility and landscaping projects. DaRosa is the owner, founder and President of B&D Construction.
DaRosa was also recognized for his significant contributions and leadership in the Taunton community. Dan’s generous support of Girls Inc. is just a tiny fraction of commitment and services he provides to the Taunton community. His impressive service record extends over 25 years when he began volunteering as a member of the Board of Directors at the Boys and Girls Club of Taunton. According to Dan, supporting youth organizations and events are a highlight of his volunteer service and are held close to his heart. For the past eight years, B&D Construction has supported the Taunton Lights On Christmas Celebration on the Taunton Green. Girls Inc. is honored to recognize Dan’s good work on behalf of so many Taunton based organizations and projects including The Boys and Girls Club, Taunton Development Corp., Taunton Area Chamber of Commerce, Taunton Area School to Career, Taunton Lights On and Taunton Parade, The Sam Turin Pavilion and the Peter Gay Memorial at Memorial Park. As Dan’s wife, Laurie, told us, “Dan loves dedicating his time to a city he feels has been so good to him.”
Family, friends and colleagues of both Dan and Darlene joined together at Girls Inc. of Taunton to celebrate Costa Brown’s Life, DaRosa’s service, and the presentation of the 2014 Dr. Darlene Costa Brown Leadership Scholarship. The award, recognizing the exceptional leadership skills and the innate qualities that inspire others to be strong, smart and bold, was presented to Avery LaValle. This year, Avery will work with leadership staff and board members in mentoring her in her desire to improve the lives of people and animals with a global mentality. She will explore the world of animal science and conservation.
Last year’s Dr. Darlene Costa Brown Leadership Scholar, Andersyn Bishop, was also in attendance. Andy worked throughout the year to inspire others to embrace equality and raise awareness for bullying. She also had the opportunity to explore her interest in private investigating. Andy met with a local private investigator while touring the Taunton district courthouse and asked many thoughtful questions about the field.
Highlights of the event included the sharing of 2012’s Dr. Darlene Costa Brown Leadership Scholar, Sophia Branco’s speech on being a part of Darlene’s legacy; citations were presented by State Representative Shaunna O’Connell, Mayor Thomas Hoye’s office and Senator Pacheco’s office recognizing Dan DaRosa’s commitment to service and leadership; and citations were presented by State Representative Shaunna O’Connell and Mayor Thomas Hoye’s office recognizing Avery LaValle’s exceptional leadership skills.
