Girls Incorporated of Taunton

Inspiring all girls to be strong, smart & bold…

2017 – Bunny Johnson

Thank you for joining us at our 11th Annual Woman of Achievement event honoring Bunny Johnson.

Bunny was honored as the quintessential Woman of Achievement. As an alumna, she embodies our mission and serves as a supreme role model for our members to aspire to.  As a young member, Bunny’s experience at the Taunton Girls Club included learning to roller skate, making crafts and forming life-long friendships.  The valuable lessons of independence and sisterhood learned in youth, inspired her to become involved as a member of our board of trustees and secure these same opportunities and the strong, smart and bold experience for generations of local girls to come.  We proudly celebrated Bunny’s service as a member of our board of trustees in which she has held the positions of fundraising chair, treasurer and vice president.

Bunny began her career at J.R. Tallman Insurance Agency more than 45 years ago as high school student filling the position of clerk.  Bunny’s quick wit and willingness to confront any challenge sparked her dedicated career as she quickly rose to the position of Vice President and General Manager.  Bunny has also turned her position at Tallman into one of a community leader, bringing Arbella Insurance’s Distractology, texting while driving simulator to local high schools; serving as director of South Coast Insurance Agents; former president of the Taunton Board of Insurance Agents; Arbella Insurance Agents Advisory Council; Taunton Area Chamber of Commerce Director; and mentor for Taunton Area School to Career program.

In her personal life, Bunny is also an inspiration to her friends and family.  A cancer survivor  who has since raised over $200,000 for the American Cancer Society; a participant of the Youth for Understanding Exchange Student Program; and a volunteer at the Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital.

This award acts as a magnifying factor for the good work being done in our community. By recognizing Bunny, we hope we have inspired others in our community to take action and make a difference.

Family, friends, business associates, organization representatives and supporters of Girls Inc. of Taunton joined together at the Stoneforge Restaurant in Raynham to celebrate Johnson’s commitment to leadership and service.  A total of three past Woman of Achievement recipients were in attendance supporting this year’s honoree; Debbie Araujo, Dr. Kathleen Hoye and Dr. Mary Pat Tranter. Also in attendance was Girls Inc.’s very own 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016 Dr. Darlene Costa Brown Leadership Scholars, Sophia Branco, Avery LaValle, Kayla Levesque and Cleo Silva; and current member president and vice president, Bella Mason and Eva Lomba.

Highlights of the event “roast” included candid and heartfelt remarks given by Melissa Denzler, Arbella’s Steven Jacobs and friend, Ted Marvel. The group of speakers provided insight into Bunny’s perseverance, leadership and towering stature.  Johnson received citations from Taunton’s Mayor Thomas Hoye and the office of State Senator Marc Pacheco and the office of State Representative Shaunna O’Connell. Remarks given by Girls Inc. Executive Director, Jessica Johnstone Darling compared Bunny to Bill Belichick invoking a “no day off”, results-driven mentality.  Guests left feeling inspired to continue embracing challenges and living life to the fullest.

Funds raised through the event help to support Girls Inc. of Taunton after-school and summer camp programs.  These life-changing programs inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold.  Research based curricula equips girls to achieve academically; lead healthy and physically active lives; manage money; navigate media messages and discover interest in science, technology and math.  Girls Inc. of Taunton proudly serves over 300 girls annually through programs, activities, special events and advocacy.
